He is a fair and just slave owner, although slavery itself was not fair or just. When his wife leaves him to raise his two daughters on his own he begins to gamble away his fortune. One day his slaves discover that he has decided to sell them off, one by one, to pay off his debts. The final indignity is when Butler decides to sell Emma, nurse maid to his girls after promising her mother this will never happen. Emma and many of the others tell the story of their sale and life in a very moving way ending with Emma's granddaughter questions about her. If you'd like to know more about how tough it was to survive as a slave read DAY OF TEARS.

PARK'S QUEST by Katherine Paterson

Park cannot understand why his mom will never speak about his dad who was killed in Viet Nam. 'Wiggle' stands for Work Grow Give Live and the student members are involved in all sorts of projects involving animals and plants. After a great deal of discussion and dread on the part of Julia the two friends decide to raise silkworms for their entry into the state fair. Julia isn't happy about this since she is Korean American and really wants to do an "American" project. The title of the story comes from the fact that silkworms eat only mulberry leaves, something difficult to find in America. Between each chapter telling the exciting story of all Julia and Patrick go through to finish their project, is a discussion between Julia the character and Linda Sue Park, the author of the book, which adds some insight into Julia's feelings. Read PROJECT MULBERRY for a great story of two friends who will be friends forever, despite occasional disagreements.

SHOOTER by Walter Dean Myers

The idea for SHOOTER came from the shootings at Clumbine High School although the story is pure fiction. Walter Dean Myers is a great author who really understands the problems children face growing up, a fact which is obvious when you read SHOOTER. The book is written in question and answer format in the form of interviews of some of the students who participated in or were friendly with those involved in a school shooting. We learn to understand the characters and the reasons for what they do. Although sad and somewhat frightening, SHOOTER holds the readers' interest throughout the book. The book also contains a fascinating interview with the author.

THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins

North America in the future is a scarey place to live. There are twelve districts, not 50 states. The government is very cruel and keeps the citizens obeying by forcing competition among the districts. Every year each district must send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death which is broadcast live to the rest of the citizens on TV, sort of like SURVIVOR. Each participant must find food and shelter and destroy the others in order to 'win' the game. Katniss, a hardworking sixteen year old who has supported her family by hunting and gathering edible plants since her dad died in a mining accident, jumps up and volunteers to take her six year old sister's place when her name is selected to participate in the 'games.' She encounters monsters, almost dies of thirst and heat or cold and makes friends with some of the people she must destroy. Read THE HUNGER GAMES for a truly exciting adventure story.

Now You See Her by Jacquelyn Mitchard

For Hope Shay the world is a stage. If you enjoy twisted scenes and cute pictures Marley and Me is the perfect book for you. I feel very bad for the family because every time there were thunderstorms things went wrong, extremely wrong. I enjoyed it and so will you. He is on a journey with his best friends, Glyfie, Twilight, and Digger, to the Ga’ Hoole Tree. The tree is inhabited by an army of owls who rise up each night and do noble deeds. However, the journey to the Ga’ Hoole Tree will be their easiest test yet. Soren and his friends will soon realize that before they can become Guardians of Ga’ Hoole, they must first be put into “chaws”, a group in which owls learn various abilities and face great challenges. Here they are trained by their “rybs” (teachers). In their training they will do perilous tasks, learn many new skills, and maybe even discover what is the “you only wish”, which is an organization that could be far worse than St. Aggies. The most gripping part, however, is when Soren, Glyfie, Twilight, and Digger have a grueling battle against a “mobbing” of crows. It is obvious that after this battle, Soren discovers that flying in the day is far too dangerous because of these crows. Can Soren continue at this fast pace and accomplish all his tasks? Can he and his friends help fight the evil that lurks in the owl kingdom? Roller coasting your way through this book will be your ultimate read ,nail biting to the end I recommend you read the entire series of the Guardians of Ga’ Hoole.

By: Alexander

SCHOOLED by Gordon Korman

Schooled by Gordon Korman is about Capricorn Anderson who lived in a community with his grandma, Rain where war, TV, money etc. didn’t exist. Everyone at school thinks she is a freak because of this. Also, she has a crush on Josh Richter, the most popular boy in school. He is going out with Lana Weinberger, the most popular girl in school. Mia’s parents are divorced and her dad lives on Genovia. Her mom, Helen Thermopolis, is a painter and going out with Mr. Gianini, her Algebra teacher. If you did you should read Zoey 101 Beach Party. You will hear about their classes, field trips and drama. My favorite part was when Quinn, a girl that is a “mad scientist” that lives in the dorm next to Zoey, made a new fruit. The new fruit was a mixture of banana and an apple. She calls it the Bannapple. I think it would taste good. Zoey has a lot of friends in her boarding school called Pacific Coast Academy (aka. PCA).Zoey’s dorm number is 101, she has two roommates their names are Nicole and Dana. Nicole is sweet and a girly girl. Dana is “a tough cookie” and sort of a “tom boy”. He is shocked to hear that his uncle has died in a car accident. However, Alex disbelieves that it was an accident especially when the cop tells him that his uncle could have survived if he had his seatbelt on. Knowing that his uncle is fixed with the idea of having a seatbelt on at all times, Alex goes looking for his uncle’s broken down car. When he finds it, he is astonished and horrified to see the bullet holes in the car’s back window. This discovery leads him to finding out that his uncle worked for the British secret service, MI6. Before Alex knows it, he is sent by MI6 to complete his uncle’s mission and to find his killers. Suddenly, Alex finds himself up to his neck in intrigue. He’s up against some of the world’s greatest criminal masterminds and with the clock ticking; Alex is running out of time. It was about a boy Stanley Yelnats who was charged with robbery when he did not commit the crime. So he was sent to a digging camp called Camp Green Lake. It was a camp designed to teach boys the hard life. In camp he meets his friends called Armpit, Zigzag, X-Ray, Zero, Squid, and Magnet. Soon when he was digging he finds something suspicious. It’s a bullet with KB marked on it. When he gives it to the Camp owner, Mr. Sir, he says to keep on digging in that area. Stanley thinks he may not just be digging for hardship. He thinks that they are digging for something important. Will Stanley ever find out what they are digging for? Will Stanley survive the hardships in Camp Green Lake? Well, if you are into suspense and humor then you will love the book It’s Not Easy Being Mean by Lisi Harison. The book is about Massie Block and her best friends called the Clique or the Pretty Committee, returning to the school OCD (Octavian Country Day). In the book some of the 7th grade girls, including Massie and her best friends, get a video from an 8th grade alpha named Sky Hamilton. Interestingly, the video tells the girls about a hidden key which they have to find. Whoever finds the key would be lead to a secret room in the school in which to hang out. There is one condition: confidentiality is of the utmost importance. None of the girls can talk to anyone about the secret key. From hereon the book holds you in suspense, but not without a lot of laughs. The book has also many funny parts. One of my favorite parts was when Massie, Dylan, and Alicia attempt to look pretty at a Tuesday afternoon soccer practice. The girls arrive wearing skirts and pretty tops. The coach was appalled and gave them five minutes to cover themselves up with towels. If they didn’t make it within five minutes, the whole team would have to sit out on Sunday’s game. “The only thing harder than getting in is staying in.” Will the Pretty Committee find the key and save their reputation for 8th grade? Well, you will have to read the book to find out.
Elisabeth

KINGDOM KEEPERS by Ridley Pearson

Did you ever want to be a hologram? Was Phillip simply being patriotic. Or was Mrs. Narwin being unfair? For Kristen, life is just getting worse and worse, but her weight isn’t the only problem. Her parents might be getting a divorce; they barely utter a word to each other each day. That’s not all though. Her best friend in the whole world, Rory, has decided to try to be friends with some of the more popular people, even if that means being loyal to the snobby Brianna Hanna-Hines, and giving up her friendship with Kristen. At least she has her younger genius sister, Kippy, and her new friends to count on.
Walk, on the other hand, while being raised by a single mom, is an African American in his new white private school. The only reason he was sent there in the first place was that his mom thought he would turn out to be a screw-up, just like his cousin. Although he and his new friend Matteo are becoming very close pals, he can’t understand why Matteo will do absolutely anything Brianna wants him to.
When Kristen discovers one of her father’s secrets, her life, and Walk’s life get pretty twisted…
Elana

Patiently Alice By: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

I think this is a great book because it is about a girl that her name is Alice. I feel bad for her because her mom died and her dad is getting married again. Her bother sometimes is mean to her and sometimes cares about her. I really like this book because the author really hooked me because she tells a lot of details about this book. She also wrote a lot of interesting stuff in this book. Alice best friends are Elizabeth and Pamela. Alice really wants long hair because she thinks having long hair is pretty. The beginning of the book was good but I like the end more because I thought it was more interesting. Patrick is Alice’s boyfriend and they are going to break up but, at the end they are really are not so that is why I think the end better. At the beginning Alice talks about her mom and I think that is sad because when a mom dies it is sad but then her dad is getting married again. she is not really sad because she always wanted a mother and now was going to get one. Alice goes to camp but things happen...find out what Latisha does to Alice. I think this is a really good book. This book is the best book I ever read.

JACK LONDON A BIOGRAPHY by Daniel Dyer

I chose the book Jack London a Biography by Daniel Dyer because I read a book he wrote called THE WILD LIFE. It was interesting because it was about a man lost in Antarctica. Jack London wrote 40 books before he died. Jack lived in West Oakland where he lived from 1888 to 1890. I thought it was impressive that Jack wrote 40 books before he died. He had trouble writing some of his books because he didn’t know how to write some words. I also learned that Jack only attended one year of high school. Jack also had a 30-foot sailboat that he used for hunting ducks. He also had two daughters by his first wife. He got married on April 23, 1907. So if you like to read a great Biography of any of your favorite authors or even Jack London, you’ll enjoy this book.

Anthony

The Big Friendly Giant By: Roald Dahl

The book The Big Friendly Giant is a really good book for kids I have read it several times. This book is so funny and it has tons of funny jokes. It’s a story about Garfield, his owner Jon, and his lovable dog Odie. Each page is a different story and sometimes it continues the story. Also Garfield tells such a funny joke about anything in that book. Trust me, it’s going to be a laugh. Mostly it makes fun of Garfield’s weight. The book shows him on front doing exercise. But trust me he will never do that. So it’s a funny and confusing book.
Gustavo

SAFE AT HOME By: Sharon Robinson

If you like sports this is the book for you. A boy named Dave runs away from the house at age 9 because his mom abused him every single day. Dave seems to think no one can help him until one day at school they reported Dave because of his conditions. He came to school with “clothes” that look like rags! He had purple and pink scratches and bruises all over his body and he had an unpleasant smell. They put Dave in an adoption center with two people that are very nice to him. Then one day he had to go to court and he was going to see his mom… Dave didn’t look forward to it, But instead his mom tells him to be good and don’t get in to trouble. Years pass and Dave is in high school. He went walking and bumped into his little brother Russell. Dave just looked at Russell and saw pink and purple bruises, scratches, the clothes, and the smell. Dave started to say “She… you …..” Russell just gave him a sad face. But she is going to do it by wearing wacky clothes. Pretty soon, Bess realizes that this isn’t working for her, so she stops. Bess’s mom works at the shelter, and every Saturday she brings food for all the homeless people that live there. But Bess thinks all the people at the shelter are creepy, and they definitely do smell bad. But Bess’s mind is soon changed when she gets to know an old homeless woman names Gracie. As Bess learns that you can’t help it if bad fortune comes your way, it doesn’t make you a bad person, she starts to help Gracie by bringing her food whenever she has time. She even let Gracie sleep at ‘The Zone’, a storage shelter at her school. Well, the school didn’t really know about that, but at least it would be safer than outside.
Bess continues helping Gracie and pretty soon is nicknamed “Gracie’s Girl” by Gracie. But as it grows colder, Bess is afraid that what she is doing isn’t enough to save Gracie. When tragedy strikes, Bess learns that she helped Gracie, and whatever had come had to come, and she must realize she helped Gracie survive and stay healthy enough to live for a lot longer than Gracie could have on her own. They were chosen by themselves. Anyway the three of them are in the Dominican Academy Adoption Center. The MoonDance kid and T.J are brothers. Their mom died when they were young, and Mop (a girl) is their best friend. They always play baseball in their spare time. They are all good. But three months later a cool family adopted the MoonDance kid and T.J. Sadly, Mop is still not adopted yet; they still always keep in touch though. T.J and the MoonDance kid asked their mom if they could play for a team called the elks. She said “yes”. And Mop’s noun teacher said she could join too since she likes community things. They play for the elks which not such a good team. The coaches are named Marla and Jim. They are married. The coaches are extremely nice! The three of them have won some games and lost some too. They go through a lot of hard work to be great. They make some errors and they do great things in games. Bad news is in a few weeks the academy is going to move to Riverhead; it’s 12 thousand miles from there. Will Mop head out to Riverhead and not be friends with T.J and the MoonDance kid or will she get adopted and still be best friends. Also will the team get to the playoffs and win the champs! Well if you read this funny, sad, exciting and blissful book, the secrets will be unlocked. Germany was not a desirable place to be in the 1930’s because of the war. Liesel finds a way to escape these dark times through books. The man who dug her brother’s grave possessed the first stolen book. From there, with the help of her loyal friend, Rudy Steiner, Liesel stole books from anywhere and anyone she could find. How was Liesel to know that these books would one day save her life from the terrible fate that will change Germany forever? The perspective of the narrator and the bits of humor about this devastating time period makes this ambitious and sad book readable and immensely enjoyable for all who enjoy a positively brilliant book.

Christina

Secret Garden By: Frances Hodgson Burnett

The book I read was The Secret Garden. The main character in the story is a little girl named Mary. She originally lived in India, with her Ayah who pampered, dressed, and fed Mary. There is a terrible disease going around in India. Mary gets sent to live with her uncle in Misselthwaite, which is an academy in a different area of India. When she reaches Misselthwaite she is just skin and bone. Her new Ayah’s name is Martha. Martha teaches Mary many things, like how to dress herself and how to feed herself. When Mary reaches Missalthwaite, she eventually meets two boys who soon become her friends. Their names are Colin and Dicken. Mary, Colin, and Dicken all discover the Secret Garden.
To find out what they do in the Secret Garden you’ll have to read this book. This story was about an Indian prince named Tamar who wagered his kingdom. At first luck was on his side, but when the other player opened the cup, Tamar had lost not only the game but the kingdom. When the king found out, he was not pleased with Tamar’s actions. Feeling ashamed, Tamar told the king that he would go to the other world to prove his honor to the king. Escorted by Darshan, Tamar left his city to get his honor back. When they got to the other world, Tamar was dropped off to start his journey. He met a hunter on the way. After the conversation they had, the day got very strange. He met a talking monkey and he met many kings. When his travel was nearly complete he noticed a sinister king named Jaya. Jaya asked him to play a game. If he wins the game he wins his honor but if he loses he shall die. This is my favorite part. Will Tamar win Jaya’s game? Mangus, the magician has been put under house arrest for practicing magic. One night, Fabrizio laid out Tarot cards to predict Mangus’s future. The cards said “The Magician, The Servant, The Castello, The King, The Ghost, The Princess, The Tutor, The Queen, and as he turned over the next card he hoped for riches, but it was, DEATH. On that same night, The Kings companion, Count Scarazoni knocked on the door and said that King Claudio called Mangus to the Castello. Fabrizio gave his master the message. Mangus didn’t know what King Claudio needed him for. King Claudio said he was forced to have Mangus the Magician use magic to free his daughter, Princess Teresina, from a terrifying ghost. Count Scarazoni thought it was a prank to keep him from marrying her, but she believes it is her brother begging for revenge of his killer. After almost every paragraph your mouth will be agape, trust me. There are many unlocked secrets I’m dying to tell you, but you should read Midnight Magic to find out the surprising secrets…
-Jenna P.

POISON IVY by Amy Goldman Koss

Three bullies, two boyfriends, one trial. The book Poison Ivy is about a girl named Ivy who had a court trial with her classmates in their government class.
This book is written with loads of humor and extreme excitement. Poison Ivy also gives the many different points of view of people in the real life. The trial in Ivy’s government class is about these three popular girls that have bullied Poison Ivy for years, Ann, Benita, and Sophie. Ivy wants an apology letter saying that they are sorry about all the bad things they have done and said to her. While this trial takes place, Ann finds an attractive guy named Marco, but will she persuade him to be the love of her dreams? When all this drama occurs, will everyone be happy? Even witnesses are brought out to decide the faith of ‘The Anns’, but will anyone be brave enough to admit the truth in front of the three witches? It is about a child named, David who discovers a clay dragon created by an artic dragon’s tear called The Fire Tear. The clay dragon allows David one wish. The dragon will only allow him the wish if it is unselfish and beneficial or the wish will turn against him. Can he finally be unselfish or will his wish turn against him? The most exciting part of the first chapter in my opinion is when David sister trys to created an interesting book and title. Her first book was denied so her next book is called The Adventures Spikey the Hedgehog. To find out what happens next ask Miss Rosenberg where you can find the book. I guarantee that you will love this book or my name isn’t Kyle. J. McHale

Do you have a favorite series? I do, and the series is called Pendragon. The book I read is the fourth book, The Reality Bug, by D. J. McHale. The Pendragon series is about a boy named Bobby Pendragon. He is a Traveler. Travelers are people from different worlds who must save the universe from the evil Saint Dane. Saint Dane is trying to destroy the universe, so he can rule everything and everyone. He finds a weakness or a turning point, in each world, to turn it to destruction. Bobby follows Saint Dane to each world to try to stop him. In this book, Bobby goes to Veelox. When he gets there he is greeted by the Traveler from Veelox, Aja Killian. There is very advanced technology on Veelox. A special program called Lifelight allows the people of Veelox to go inside their own fantasies. Everyone is addicted to Lifelight. Suddenly, there is a problem with Lifelight. I think the most interesting part in the book is when Aja, Bobby, and Loor, the Traveler from Zadaa, try to fix the problem with Lifelight. Saint Dane thinks that if everyone is in Lifelight, the world will fall apart. They have to go inside the fantasy of Dr. Zetlin, the creator of Lifelight to fix the problem. How are they going to find Dr. Zetlin? Can you guess who is responsible for the problem with Lifelight? Can Bobby get everyone out of Lifelight and beat Saint Dane? Will Veelox be destroyed? The Pendragon series are great and I love them!
Kaitlyn

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://readoften.blogspot.com/2007/12/reality-bug-by-d-j-mchale.html' title='REALITY BUG by D. If you haven’t, you should read Nothing But The Truth. This documentary novel is about Philip Malloy, a ninth Grader, who was suspended for two days because he was accused of singing while the national anthem tape was playing. Philip’s mother had to come pick him up. When he got home he ran up the stairs went to his room and slammed the door and didn’t come out until his father came home. Suddenly, Philip’s story appeared in the newspaper, but the story’s details were mistaken. So funny that your not able take your mind of the book and excited to read the next chapter of the book? Well, you’re going to love the book Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes. This book is about a boy named Gary W. Boone, but every one calls him Goon. He likes to tell jokes at school, but no one laughs at them. They just think he’s weird. There is a talent show at school and first prize is 100 dollars. Gary is planning to sign up. He goes home and tells his parents and his dad offers him another 100 dollars if he doesn’t tell 1 joke into the talent show. My favorite part is when people tell him a joke and he is not supposed to answer it because it is apart of his dad’s deal. I like this book because it was about adventures in the wild. I wanted to read this book because it looks like it has a lot of mystery and adventure. My favorite part of this book was when Alexa and tree friends were looking for the city “Valley of Thorns”. One of her friends named Yipes found a letter with a map on the back of a piece of paper. The letter was from a really close friend of Alexa named Warvold. He was trying to find the city “Valley of Thorns”, but he died so he left the map with a letter to Alexa. This map leads to the city “Valley of Thorns” and the favorite part was when Alexa got into trouble in a really dark forest and it was kind of like interesting for me. If you want to read this book I really recommend it if you are a person that likes adventures and the wilderness. So if you want to find out how it ends you’ll have to read the book!!

Fredy

THE CHALK BOX KID by Clyde Robert

Gregory loved to draw pictures. One day Gregory woke up and his mother and father were getting ready for work. The mother works at a restaurant and the father works at a bank. Mother asked Gregory, “Do you want your uncle to go with you to the new school?” Gregory said NO and ran out the door.

Then Gregory went to school and went in the office and asked the lady that was standing at the desk where to go. “I am a new student at this school,” he said. He was told to go to room 33.
After school he went home and then he saw his Uncle Max watching T.V. Gregory went into the room and looked around and when he was looking he saw pictures. There were none of Gregory pictures; there were only his Uncle Max’s pictures. The next day Gregory went school and his friend Ivy said he was a good artist.

Ivy and Gregory found a little shed that was not being used. They also found some chalk in the shed. What do you think they did with the chalk? Do you want to know how Molly Pitcher got her name? Then read American Revolution by Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce. It is part of the Magic Tree House research series.

American Revolution tells you facts about America during the Colonial and Revolutionary times. You could learn about weapons or famous people. It tells you how people lived and worked in the colonies. It also follows the events of the American Revolution.

My favorite part was the section on weapons. It has lots of cool facts about them. Did you know that a cannon could hit a target 100 yards away? Or that a bayonet is a sword that fits on a musket?

If you like reading about history then American Revolution is the book for you.
Rolland

I Was a Teenage Fairy by: Francesca Lia Block

“After a while crocodile” is what Mab would say to Barbie. Barbie has been a model since childhood. This is what her mother forced her to do because she was one in her childhood. That is why she named Barbie after the plastic doll. Mab is the one who gives her advice and comments of what she does. Mab is a small, magenta-haired, straight-talking fairy who may or may not be real. The only way Barbie can get through her life is with Mab. I would have to say that my favorite part was the part when Mab was taking Griffin on a ride in the night sky while he thought he was having a dream. As Barbie goes on with her life you can examine it with her. Read the story to find how the story ends and know the new people from the story. Take this book and have a great laugh after!!

~ Anne

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

The title of the book that I read is called Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The reason why I chose this book is because someone recommended it to me, and as I started it I couldn’t stop. This book is basically about a kid writing about his life. His life isn’t really that great. His name is Greg. He also has a friend named Rowley. Both of them are very nerdy. Whenever they go to school, they always get made fun of. For example: they went trick-or-treating, and they’re costumes were so terrible that no one even wanted to give them candy. One day Greg went to school and two big bullies shoved him and his books onto the floor, and his friends had to come and try to stand up to the bullies. This book was very interesting, and I enjoyed it, and I recommend it to anyone who likes books based on peoples’ life.

Crystal

FALLEN ANGELS by Walter Dean Myers

During the Vietnam era, many parents did not know where their children were. Were they safe and sound in bunks? Were they fighting against a foreign person halfway across the world? Or were they being shipped over to the states in a coffin? These probably were the thoughts of parents in the book I read, Fallen Angels, by Walter Dean Myers. He catches the excitement, thrills and of course the sadness n this touching novel.

My favorite part was when Richard Perry, the main character planted a claymore mine (a mine that when triggered hurtles hundreds of steel fragments) the wrong way. Then, the leader saw an enemy turn it around as it was being set off. Everyone ducked. After the firefight, the leader asked to talk to Perry. Since the leader saw the enemy turn the claymore around, he was wondering which direction the claymore had been first. I thought that this showed even people in the army are not perfect (although in this situation it is more deadly).

So, to conclude, this is a gripping, suspenseful novel that I am sure you will love.

Jack

Spirits and Spells by Bruce Coville

The book I read was Spirits and Spells it was about a group of kids that make up a game. When they go in Travis waits in the library while the rest of the group goes to find the items required to play the game. The game says they all have new names and magical powers. Travis played tricks on the rest of the group with scary items. Then the joke became real and now everything is going wrong there is a ghost in the house that was once a tape recorder. The first part talks about how Phillip was rescued from the Cay. He finally hears his parent’s voice for the first time ever since the Hato (the ship that he was on when a German U-boat torpedoed it). When he goes home he trips over every thing since he is blind. He receives word that there is a doctor that can get his sight back that is in New York. The second part of the book is about Timothy before and on the Hato. It is about a child named, David who discovers a clay dragon created by an artic dragon’s tear called “The Fire Tear”. Her first book was denied so her next book is called “The Adventures Spikey the Hedgehog”. To find out what happens next ask Miss Rosenberg where you can find the book. I guarantee that you will love this book or my name isn’t Kyle. If I’m wrong try the sequel to this book by Chris D’Lacey and book review by Austin in Miss Mininger’s advisory.

Kyle

THE ZOMBIE ZONE by Ron Roy

The Zombie Zone was one of my favorite books. My favorite part is when Wart gets turned into a snake. When Wart gets turned into a snake he learns about history from a snake who tells him how the dinosaurs became extinct and how snakes got their poison. Merlyn has to leave Wart because Wart’s half brother Kay is becoming a knight. Kay goes to a joust and forgets his sword so Wart has to go and find him one. Wart sees a stone with a sword in it. They are in the seventh grade, but go to different middle schools. My favorite part was when each of them described each other in the beginning of the book. Both Meg and Edward said that they were nothing alike. It made me laugh because they said things about each other that made them sound horrible! It was my favorite part because it sounded like they weren’t even related to each other. Everything they said made me laugh. It was funny that they talked about each other that way, and they were brother and sister! I also liked how the authors made it easy to figure out who was talking because they used different fonts for the characters. Also it was interesting to find out where the title of the book came from.
If you like to read books that are interesting, funny and exciting, then “Never Mind” is the book for you. It makes you want to keep reading chapter after chapter. When the characters find themselves in a certain situation, are they really as different as they say, or are they more alike then they think? To find out what happens to Meg and Edward, you have to read the book. I personally give it two thumbs up!
Melissa

Escape From Egypt: A Novel by Sonia Levitin

Do you enjoy adventure books, action, a bit of history, and even with some romance? If you like any of these types of books you should read this book. This book is about how boy named Jesse (Israelite) and a girl named Jannet (half Egyptian and half Syrian which means she is treated better by the Egyptians). Now Israelites are planning to escape from Egypt and an old Israelite man named Moses thinks he can lead them to the land of Canaan the land their god Adonai promised their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. While working Jesse gets hit on the head with a piece of metal, Jennat now being promised to In-hop-tep (her master) has more power so she gets the master physician for Jesse. Moses asks the pharaoh if they can leave Egypt; the pharaoh says no so Adonai gets mad and four plagues occur: the Nile River turns to blood, lice invade, and locust eats all the crops, and finally makes all the first born children will die unless they put a symbol made out of goat blood. After all these plagues the pharaoh actually forces the Israelites to leave but before they leave Adonai tells them to go to everyone’s and ask for their jewels Jesse goes to Jennat’s house and tries to convince her to go to Canaan she declines but tells him to take Shepset her closest friend because she got hurt and fired as the priests’ dancer, Jennat wants him to take care of her as a favor; Jesse accepts for he thinks of Jennat as a friend. They finally left and Jesse’s mom Devorah immediately treating Shepset (not suspecting she was not an Israelite). After figuring out Shepset is not an Israelite Devorah says she must go with the other clans. Jesse finds Jannet in the clan he is filled with joy he goes to see why she came she told him that her mistress tried to kill her (Jesse thinks he loves Jannet but he is promised to Talia his cousin who he does not love). Moses goes up onto a mountain and talks to Adonai he takes to long and the people make a golden calf the god gets very angry and kills many people. My favorite part was when Jesse’s Cousin Avi has left with Jennat and Shepset after a fight with his dad, Uncle Rimon because his dad was trying to protect him but he still didn’t understand. Uncle Rimon is dead now and his Mother Devorah died too because of a plague. Jesse then learns that Nathan is not his father and how he traded other babies for Jesse life so Devorah agreed to marry him Jesse then leaves after learning all of this information about his past; he takes some sheep and goats and leaves. Meanwhile Avi got Shepset pregnant and after hearing the news about how the clan that they are with is trying to kill all of the Israelite for they now that last time the Israelites almost got killed by their god Adonai for worshipping another god. Avi and Jannet leave and run into Jesse right before he was about to die they told him what happened and they rushed to warn the Israelites. Will they make it on time to save the Israelites, will they make it to Canaan and will Jesse end up with Jannet? Shortly after he is born, his father is killed by a lynx. The litter begins to starve, and White Fang would be the only one to survive. He soon discoveries that in the wild only the strong survive, and the weak become pray to them.
My favorite part is when White Fang is forced into a dog fight by his owner against a giant bull-dog. White Fang has never fought a dog like this, so he isn’t sure what it does or how it fights. White Fang is fast and strong, and quickly dives in and out, biting and ripping at the bull-dog. The bull-dog is oblivious to the blows, simply allowing White Fang to slash him, but always following him, waiting for him to make a mistake. The bull-dog constantly keeps his jaw low to protect his throat and he is to sturdy for White Fang to knock him over. Finally, White Fang tries again to knock him over but he hits the other dog with his own shoulder and is knocked to the ground. White Fang is quickly on his feet again but by then the bull-dog had gotten a grip on his throat. The bite was in a bad spot, being to low from the soft spot on the throat but the dog hung on. White Fang twists and turns, trying to shake the massive dog, but it hangs on, slowing inching closer to the lethal spot on White Fangs throat. Finally, after several minutes of struggling, White Fang is finally exhausted and drops down.
I liked the book but it definitely wasn't my favorite. There were a few interesting parts that were different and exciting but besides from those it seemed that the story was very repetitive, often stating the same thing over and over again.
Peter

The Angels Command Tales of the Flying Dutchman by: Brian Jacques

This book is about a boy named Ben and a dog named Ned. As a gift he gave a free trip to his friends. The dude ranch is in Bozeman, Montana. They arrived by a small airplane. There are many things to do on the ranch, like horse riding, roping and panning for gold. One day, Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose went panning for gold. Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose went to a lake and started searching around for rocks. Then Josh found a rock in the pond. It was a gold nugget. Josh was excited about finding the gold nugget and seeing how much it was worth. When they went back they weighed it to see how much it was worth. They locked it up in a small metal box like a safe. Then they went for a horse ride. When they returned the nugget was stolen.

My favorite part is when Josh , Dink and Ruth Rose try to find the thief. They searched for clues and suspects. Josh thought it was Thumbs, the ranch hand. Dink did not think it was Thumbs. They were at dinner and they came up with an idea. They decide to search the cabins. They thought it was someone staying at their ranch. Josh, Dink and Ruth Rose said they had schoolwork to do. They went out side and it was dark. They decided to split up and search the cabins. Josh searched Thumbs cabin. Dink searched Ed’s cabin. Ruth Rose searched Fiona’s cabin. They did not find the gold in anyone’s cabin. Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose sat outside of the cabins and watched as someone came back to the cabin. They looked through the window and watched and watched the person packing. Her father is killed by British soldiers. When she returns home, she finds out that the Redcoats have taken her mother as a prisoner to New York City. Willy dresses in an outfit that makes her look like a boy. She starts on a journey towards New York City to try to find her mother. During the trip, she meets Horace who works with Sam Fraunces, owner of the famous Fraunces Tavern. He gives her a ride to New York and a safe place to stay at the tavern. She finds her mother, but her efforts to save her do not work as her mother dies. This story focuses on the desperation of a teenage girl and free black during the Revolutionary War traveling to reunite with her family.

This book is packed with adventure and excitement. It makes the reader want to turn to the next page to see what happens next. The author makes the characters real and believable by putting a story of fiction in a non-fiction setting. It makes you want to route for Willy to succeed in her journey to find her mother and makes you sad when her father and mother die.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes history and adventure. It teaches you about history in a very interesting way, but telling you a story around historical events. Although everything that happens in the book is not real, it is based on real life events that give you a sense of what really may have been experienced by somebody during this period.
Luke

NOTES FROM A LIAR AND HER DOG by Genifer Choldenko

This story is about a girl named Antonia and her two best friends Pistachio and Harrison.
