The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Liesel Meminger was a nine year old German girl whose brother died on the way to the home of her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Huberman. Germany was not a desirable place to be in the 1930’s because of the war. Liesel finds a way to escape these dark times through books. The man who dug her brother’s grave possessed the first stolen book. From there, with the help of her loyal friend, Rudy Steiner, Liesel stole books from anywhere and anyone she could find. How was Liesel to know that these books would one day save her life from the terrible fate that will change Germany forever? The perspective of the narrator and the bits of humor about this devastating time period makes this ambitious and sad book readable and immensely enjoyable for all who enjoy a positively brilliant book.
