CAR TROUBLE by Jeanne DuPrau
Duff is a recent high school graduate who is what people call a "computer nerd." Against his parents' wishes, instead of going to college, he is leaving on a road trip from their home in Virginia to California where he has secured a job creating video games for a brand new company no one has ever heard of. Within hours of starting what he calls "The great cross country journey of Duff Pringle," his old car breaks down and his adventures begin as he tries to get to California with the help of a crooked hitchhiker, some thugs and a dog who gets constantly carsick. Does he ever make it to California and his new job?
