SMOKESCREEN by Amy Goldman Koss

SMOKESCREEN by Amy Goldman Koss
Mitzi is a middle school student whose mother has been trying to quit smoking for as long as Mitzi can remember. Every few weeks, she makes a big show of crumbling up her cigarette packs and throwing them in the trash. After a few days of either lying in bed or snapping at everyone who comes near her, she picks up a cigarette and is at it again. One day in school, Mitzi realizes that a boy she likes will pay attention to her if he thinks she has big family problems. Mitzi makes up a story about her mother being desperately ill to get his attention. This leads to many problems with friends and her family. To see what trouble Mitzi gets in to, read SMOKESCREEN, by Amy Goldman Koss.
